Jesus in Rio de Janeiro

Elder Beal,
Life is ever-changing!  I am so happy to hear how wonderful the people in your ward are to you.  When you have changes, I am sure leaving Enrique will be the hardest. I love him and his sweet Orfilina so much and I have only known them through your letters and videos.
Changes around here this week:
Camilla and I helped Sariah get settled into her new apartment in Provo. She has 5 room-mates and they all seem wonderful.  Jordan Fagan lives right above her and all the girls are fantastic.  One attends BYU and just returned from her mission to Hong Kong, her friend served in your mission.  Two attend UVU are preparing for missions. They all are boy crazy!
On our way home yesterday, Camilla toured BYU-I. Donavaghn and cousin Kira gave us the tour.  The campus is so beautiful!  Every building is wonderful, the grounds are amazing and the temple overlooks it all. Not going to lie, it is remote, but I think worth it, the spirit is strong there.
Nauvoo and Malachi stayed behind for their games and to keep dad company. Karlita stopped by and said hi to dad while she was here visiting her family this weekend. Made his day:) Malachi's game was cancelled due to extreme weather, the worst since 1962.  I don't think it was anything this far inland outside of a little wind and rain, but there are videos of the coast with a tornado over the ocean and winds clocked at 100 mph.
My spiritual thought is from BYU-I weekly devotional.  I will include a link for you here
Just in case you can't link up, here is a snip it of a missionary story he shared:
In the Ensign there is a story about a young man named Christopher, who was grateful he didn't turn bread into stone or serpents. When he tore open his mission call, his heart dropped when he read the line "Michigan Lansing Mission." He had waited his whole life for that moment. He took German and Spanish in high school because he had dreamed of a foreign mission--walking the cobbled streets of Europe or hiking remote mountain pueblos in South America. What he got, however, was Michigan. Did you ever have something like that happen to you--you figuratively wanted Argentina, but what you got was Michigan? Christopher could have regarded that call as a stone, a serpent, but instead he saw it as bread. He accepted the call the Lord gave and served an honorable mission.
More than 20 years after his return, his neighbor invited him to take a DNA test. "I had been adopted and had no idea of my biological ancestry," said Christopher. He was curious about his biological parents but was content with his life. He had a family he loved. Then the results came back. It was a "close family" match. It predicted with 99 percent that they found a close family member.
"Before I knew what was happening," said Christopher,
my wife composed] an email to send to this "close family" match.

Within minutes an email came back. How old was I? Where was I born? . . .
It turned out the "close family" match was my half brother. The person sending the emails was my birth mother. . . . [S]he wanted me to call her.

The next morning I dialed her number. As we talked, she told me the story of my birth.

Before Christopher hung up, he asked about his biological father. His mother thought Christopher's father was from Lansing, Michigan. Within minutes after the phone call, Christopher found his father on the Internet. He lived in an area close to where Christopher served his mission. Digging further, he discovered his dad had a sister in the same area. He emailed his father, and his father replied that his sister was LDS, and she and her husband were coming to Utah and hoped they could visit with Christopher.
As they walked in my door, I felt an instant familiarity. Suddenly another light turned on. The man's hair had gone from black to silver, . . . but suddenly I saw in front of me the ward mission leader from the Grand Rapids Ward. . . . I had worked [with him during] a large part of my mission. For months I had been at his home weekly. I had played with his children--my cousins--and been with my aunt and uncle and hadn't known it.
In light of my discovery, I knew why I had been called to serve a mission in Michigan. . . . My biological family was spread all over Michigan in the places where I was called . . . to serve. . . . I knew now . . . this was truly a call by inspiration specifically for me.[16]

In the same way, that mission call was a part of Christopher's micro plan, and Joseph's slavery was part of his plan, our experiences are part of our plans. Why God tailors some experiences for us may not be clear now. Thus, we may have to be patient because "all things must come to pass in their time"--even understanding.[17] However, with the Savior's help we can learn to not only say, "Thy will be done[, Lord]," but patiently also, "Thy timing be done."[18]

You may not now know all the reasons why you were called to serve in the Madrid, Spain mission at this time, but undoubtedly God does.  He masterfully coordinates all the intricate pieces to help us all to return to Him.  I love you so much and am very proud of you. I will send pictures from my phone in a separate email.
Je'taime Toujours,

Mom
What's up hot  Mama,
I have really enjoyed my week. That's awesome that Sariah is starting school especially with an old friend. It feels like everyone is growing up. Soon everybody's going to have kids. That's crazy. I'm kinda feeling low on energy. And I want to just be done with it so I can go and work hard like I should be. We hiked up a mountain in Oviedo last week, on top of the mountain is a big statue of Jesus Christ. Looks like a small version of the Jesus in Rio de Janeiro. I'm really excited for the  end of this month, I can't believe that I'm turning 20! It's been a year since I've seen you guys. I feel like the time is just flying here in the mission and I think that the reason for that is ~ I'm having fun. I'm excited for Halloween for two reasons, 1. We are dressing up because it's on P-Day. 2. I had a special time at Ray's Food Market 2 years ago. I love you mom and I want everyone at home to know that I hope that they have a Feliz Halloween tío. 👻 (with a Mexican accent). Mucho Amor. Moroni

Answered Prayers

Elder Beal,
Man of few words, please tell me about your illness. Did you receive a priesthood blessing? Are you getting better? Did you see a doctor or visit a hospital? I hope and pray everyday that you are well. I love you.
Another super busy week. Time zooms by so quickly here, I can scarcely catch my breath. Today is grandma Emily's birthday. We were able to stop by for a lovely visit this afternoon. It was wonderful to sit a spell and visit. She doesn't look a day over 36!
The girls party was fun. We had a nacho bar and a S'mores station. They played signs and fugitive.
Sariah needs to pack this week, I am driving her to Utah on Wednesday. It feels surreal. I have lots of peace mixed with sadness at how fast you all grow up.
Malachi assisted in my Gospel Doctrine class today. Our lesson was on listening to the words of the prophet. We were in the last three chapters of Heleman where Samuel the Lamamite stood on the wall of Zarahemla to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Malachi came in during the last 10 minutes and stood on a wall of chairs and preached to my class. I am so proud of him and thankful for his willingness to serve. I am a lucky mom to have such amazing kids. Each of you bless and enrich my life in different ways.
Dad and his buddies camped outside of Grants Pass and rode some new terrain there. I think he likes his new bike.
In my lessons this week, I had to do a few different styles of ancestor searches. On books.google I typed Ezra T. Clark, your great grandfather on Emily's mom side and found a portion of his testimony in The Teachings of the Prophets: Joseph Smith. Read chapter 27 to find it. I love the encouraging words of the prophet. Elder Christopherson is coming here this weekend for a regional conference.
I love you!
Mom

Hello Momma,
Everything is good. I'm not sick anymore and I'm starting to feel trunky because Christmas is in two months! I do believe that the cure  of my sickness came from everyone in the church praying for the missionaries. I've been taking some vitamin shocked drinks to help me out with my energy. For some reason I've been pretty low and I need that extra energy to keep working. I swear that I received about thirty calls last week from the members asking me if I was ok. They're so amazing. I've affected them in some way that they really worry about me. The remind me of home. Enrique really helped me out a lot last week, I will always cherish him and his sweet joyful spirit. This week was really fun we walked around in Leon for about four hours trying to find some new people to teach and we passed by some old amigos. That's so awesome that Elder Christofferson is coming to our stake. You guys will really enjoy that. I love mom and I'll see you luego!! Os quiero!

Strange Illness

Elder Beal,
Your baby sister turns 16 tomorrow!  She is a sweet delight who always finds the best in others.  Her and Sariah are going to celebrate their birthdays together this Saturday night. Sariah will move into an apartment in Provo, UT on her birthday weekend. CRAZY how fast time flies!  So did you do something silly to celebrate your half-time in the mission?
Tonight while we were playing Life, Camilla accused Malachi of tooting--twice.  He defensively responded "It was only once!"  She quickly said "With a half-time in the middle?" I sent you a picture of their silliness.
The last talk of all of conference reminded me of you.  Dale G. Renlund spoke of his fire cracker incident. Boy will be boys. Smoke bomb in the locker room? Fart spray during trek? He's turning out alright, and so are you.  I love all the hope and joy of conference.  I loved watching President Monson wave to the crowd as he was leaving after the Sunday morning session.  What was your favorite talk?
I was able to sub in Seminary on Monday. The lesson is found in the first half of Matthew 13 and was on the types of soil the seeds land in. The parable likens the four types of soil to the condition of our heart. In the story the savior shares what happens to the seed (word of God) in each type of soil (our hearts).  Though only one type of soil is successful in growing the seed, all of them can become like that soil. The work of amending, and harrowing, and weeding might need to take place before our soil can be ready, but it can be ready.  Our Seminary class is filled with wonderful, amazing youth! There is 19 actively attending! Fantastic group.
It is great how much love your ward shows to the members there.  Love is really what life is all about.  Love God first and everything else will work itself out.
I love you and hope you have a fantastic week!
Love,
Mom

Hey Mom,
This week hasn't been the best, I'm actually sick right now. I might go to the hospital today. We had some changes here in my district, so today was kind of crazy. Right now we're in Domino's eating. It's been a pretty nice day. On Tuesday, I went in shock for some reason and my whole body went numb. It freaked me out and then this week I've been super tired and all achy. The members have been calling me all day because they heard that I was sick and so they were worried, it really means a lot, they're so sweet. I love you mom and I'll talk to you next week.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!! HALF-TIME!!!

Elder Beal,
This week you will celebrate your half way point. I am so very proud of you! What is the tradition? Burn a shirt, cut a tie? I hear in some missions the Elders burn a skirt at the 18 month marking they are no longer sisters. Silly boys! Please give a hug and kiss to beautiful Orfelina and her good-looking sweetheart too. Are you still hanging out with Luis? I hope he is well.
You know I haven't sent you anything for almost a year because of the expensive tariff, but there must be a way to avoid that. What if it was smaller or sent directly to you or is it better to send to the mission home? I don't want to get you in trouble, but I do want to send something. Are letters okay?
Dad and I saw a movie called Sully this week. It is based on a true story of a pilot who had to land his plane with 155 passengers in it on the Hudson River in New York in Jan of 2009.  Anyway in the film he says "I've flown thousands of people in countless planes landing them safely in destinations all over the world for over 40 years, but in the end I will be judged on 208 seconds." When I heard that, I was so grateful for the atonement and plan of salvation.   I am so glad we are not judged on our scariest 208 seconds.
Every single passenger survived because of his brilliant skills and the quick first respond teams on scene. Each of us can survive the turmoil of mortality because of the brilliant plan our Father in Heaven created for us.
I am looking forward to General Conference this week and can't wait to hear which talk was your favorite. I love you with all my heart!
Love,
Mom

Dear Momma
I hope that you had a wonderful week, I had a pretty good one, we went to León for a Zone Conference, President Pack taught us how to better use the Book of Mormon when answering questions of the soul, so this week we have been making questions and answering them. As members and missionaries, we receive these questions of the soul every day from our friends and family and it is our job to help them answer the questions that I have. As we start to teach using the Book of Mormon our friends and family will start to notice the truth of its teachings. We need to be studying, pondering and praying so that we can be ready to be an instrument in the Lord's hands. I love being here in Gijon. From what I've been seeing up here in the north is that everyone is struggling but for some reason the lord is really blessing us. Which is fine, I just want everyone to be doing as good or better then we are. Maybe we just need to sacrifice a little bit more and than the lord will bless us because of our faith. I hope that y'all are doing good and that the ward is too. Send them some besos and un abrazo. I love y'all. Moroni
Don't worry about the packages 📦 a letter would do.

Sweethearts

Elder Beal,
Oh how we loved the video of these sweet lovebirds!  They are so darling and fun!  I would love to wrap my arms around them in a warm embrace and tell them that I love them. Thrilling news that she got baptized on Friday.  I would love to hear more of their story.  Was he already a member?  Was he able to baptize her?  Are they newlyweds?  His gentle chuckle and great big belly laugh are medicinal to me.  They make me so happy!  I need to laugh like that more often, what an upbeat man.

My birthday was amazing!  Everybody at work brought in goodies and gifts.  They were all so thoughtful.  Plus, I am now the proud owner of the buzzard.  This buzzard lands on your desk when you turn 40 at work, and stays there until the next person turns 40!  Thankfully, someone turns 40 in January and he will fly to their spot.

After work, I was really just stressing about learning the new interface for my online classes and was trying to bust out a few assignments before we went to grab a bite to eat and watch a movie I wanted to see.  Dad says it is time to go, and so I run out the door with them and I am rubbing my eyes as we get close to the restaurant and don't even notice he missed the turn to Miguels and brought me to Harnish Wayside park, where a surprise party was waiting for me!  So wonderful to be surrounded by so much love!

This weekend, I enjoyed Time Out For Women in Sacramento.  The girls were supposed to go with me but the couldn't get off work and Nauvoo was bumped up to Varsity, so Jodi and I went on our own and had a great time!.  I love TOFW. I could have stayed an extra day for sure.  Malachi had his first soccer game yesterday and Nauvoo went to Homecoming with some friends.  Sariah and Jordan Fagan are trying to get an apartment together in Provo and one just became available mid-October.  They are excited of the prospect of being roommates and both are considering missions again.

Spiritual Thought- President Kimball said the most important word in the dictionary could be remember.  Each week we remember during the Sacrament.  I dug a little deeper and learned that remember is a verb, which is an action word.  In English, that usually references a mental recollection.  However in Hebrew it denotes a physical action. Therefore phrases like 'remember the Sabbath Day' , Remember the Lord your God', or 'remember to keep the commandments' all involve action and not just a mere thought. The word remember is found 240 times in the Book of Mormon and 15 times in Helaman chapter 5 when Helaman the younger blesses and counsels his sons Lehi and Nephi prior to their missionary work. How do you say remember in Spanish and does it have the same or different meaning there?

Pictures are in  separate email. I tried to send a video for you, but it always says it is too large ;( I am going to get some help from the young kids in this family with this tech stuff!

I love you,
Mom

Hey mom
I have been doing pretty good this week, I had some friends come to church. A member asked his girlfriend to get married at the end of church which was crazy. We had the baptism of Orfelina on Friday and she asked me If I would confirm her on Sunday which was a sweet experience. Her testimony is so strong and from the heart. I'm glad to be able to help her on this path to eternal life. God really prepared her and she was ready in 20 days which is really fast. Enrique really showed her the example. She was ready just by coming to church. The members really show people love and that is one of the attributes of the spirit. I think that when the members do their best to show and give love, the investigators really want to be there and feel that they can fit in. I hope that you enjoyed your birthday and that you had fun in Sacramento. Karly told me that her family just went to the Oakland temple. I love you mom tell the family and the ward that I think that they're the best and I send them my love. Tú hijo mado Elder Moroni Beal

Happy, Happy, Happy!

 Sis Beal,
My husband and I are traveling through Spain, and attended church in Gijon this morning, where we met and were greeted by your wonderful and handsome son....and thought you would like a picture of him with his current companion, Elder Walker.

Your son looks happy and loving the work he is doing.  We so admire the missionaries!

Randy and Sylvia Deschamps
Elder Beal,
This week I am especially grateful for faith in Christ.  I know it seems simple enough but only through Him can we accomplish anything.  Activating our faith by works and sincere prayer can bring about miracles. Faith also can grant peace greater than earthly description that outshines the darkest storms. Peace that will safely guard and guide us home. Life is precious and fleeting.  I am sad that I am only beginning to understand this concept now.  It is so important to love and serve those whom we encounter and especially those who we are linked for eternity to. I often have taken for granted and assumed that all my children know that I love them more than anything. That I am very proud of them.  That I think they are amazing. Yet, I neglect to often to remind them of these truths. This is my new goal, to love deeper by expressing my love more frequently in the lives of my family.

Bishop would like to get your plaque ordered and up on the wall in the next couple of weeks.  What scripture did you want displayed on it? What would you like for your birthday?

I will send a couple of pictures from my phone in a separate email.  I love you.

Forever in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Mom

The very best district!
Hey muchacha,
This week has been pretty crazy but it's been pretty awesome at the same time. First of all, HAPPY CUMPLEAÑOS!!!!!!!!!! Turing thirty is definitely a good age for yah. I'm so proud to be your son, I show everybody pictures of you and they all say, "Que Hermosa," "Que joven." Or how beautiful, how young. We have spent almost 20 years together, that's awesome. I hope that y'all go and do something amazing. I love you mom and I have been thinking a lot about how much you guys show me that you love me. Over the years I can think back to all the times you have told me that you've loved me. A lot of children have not had that opportunity. I think that you guys have been so strong in raising us kids in the gospel. I've thought about being a dad and it scares me, to have young guy following my every move is going to be crazy. I hope that you that you enjoyed being a mom to me even though it was a long and windy road to get me on this straight and narrow path. Because I definitely did. Thank you Mom. By the way Enrique's wife Orfelina is getting baptized this week, on Friday. I'll send you some pictures, they're so cute. Te quiero madre, espero que disfrutes tu día de nacimiento.

Gift of Tongues

Elder Beal,
So much has happened this week! Let's start with today and work our way backwards. Bishop Hill was released today and was called to be the Seminary teacher.  Nauvoo broke down in tears, she was so pleased.  Bishop Hill is our new Bishop (Spencer). Camilla flew to Utah this morning and will be back in a week.  Bethany and Elijah were baptized yesterday morning, it was lovely.  School starts on Tuesday, yet Nauvoo has already had three volleyball games.  She is the setter on the JV team.  Dad is back from his big motorcycle ride.  I should have taken a photo of his beard.  I sent a few pictures of his ride in Southern Utah.  He had a really great time riding in the desert and riding jet skis on a lake. Of all the pictures I've seen, I love the hieroglyphs and the St. George temple the most, besides pictures of your dad ;). Malachi and I picked a bucket full of tomatoes from the garden.  Our green grapes are gang-busters this year.
The Jarvie's had a gathering to welcome home and say farewell to Donavaghn as he is headed off to BYU-I.  Rick has also been accepted there and will start this winter term after he returns with honor. In Gavin's last email that I read, he was going to apply there too.  It would be super cool if ya'll went there!  It was neat to visit with him about his mission.  His grandpa, Brother Walker, has some really cool stories about his first mission in Taiwan. There were no members when they arrived in Taiwan and 500 members when their mission was complete. He served there prior to any branches being established or any church publications in Mandarin.  In fact one of his companions, Elder Cutler, was bummed that he only baptized one during his three year ministry there.  However that one, was instrumental in the translation of the Book of Mormon into Mandarin.  The power of one teamed up with the Lord is mighty.
Your friend Luis has posted a few things of you on FB this week and that has been fun to see.  I appreciate his thoughtfulness. Please give him my love.  Howard Woods called tonight because he saw you on FB and left a lovely message about you and asked me to say hello to you in my next email.
I have been studying about the Holy Ghost the past couple of weeks and I really like learning about the sanctifying power to help us in the process of becoming more like our Father in Heaven. The other thing I was glad to be reminded of was that all gifts of the spirit come through the Holy Ghost and when our desires are righteous to obtain one for the benefit of His work and Glory than through our effort and faith, it can be obtained.

I love you and am so proud of you.  Keep working hard and keep smiling!

Love,
Mom

Bethany and Elijah's baptism- Nauvoo's fried cucumber- Nauvoo's first home game, she is the one closest to the net in yellow.-Dad's Utah ride

Hey Momma,
I hope that you enjoyed your week this week and I hope that the family is doing good. This week is a little crazy we had exchanges with the Zone Leaders, after that we had District meeting which was actually very good. My district is the best two natives, 3 Americans and a French kid that grew up in Texas. I be been thinking a lot about what home life will be like and I almost Flipar. I have less than a year left because of transfers, so I should be walking out of the terminal the first week of September. Which is funny because I haven't hit a year yet. I've started to talk with Luis every day for a half hour to better my Spanish. I have most of the words down but sometimes it's hard for me to put them in a good sentence. Most of the time I can understand what someone's saying to me. I'm also working on my accent. I really want to sound like a Spaniard so that when I get back I can really talk to someone with the best Spanish in the world. No offense Donavaghn and Jared. I love you mom and I'm so glad for all the old photos that you send me. You guys are the best. Tell everyone that I say hi.
Love,
Elder Beal
